FSJP Wellesley
Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine (FSJP) Wellesley is a newly formed inclusive collective within the Wellesley community, formed in response to the urgent call to establish FSJP groups across U.S. campuses. We define ‘faculty and staff’ broadly to refer to those involved in making education available at Wellesley, including both tenure and non-tenure track faculty, post-docs, and staff. We stand in support of those working towards Palestinian liberation and justice in Palestine.
Statement of Principles
- We assert the right to exert our academic freedoms, and to express our perspectives as scholars, intellectuals, thinkers, and educators. Our university campus and classrooms must be an open and welcoming space for teaching and learning about issues relating to the history and the contemporary reality of Palestine/Israel and the Middle East more broadly.
- We understand the struggle for Palestinian liberation to be aligned with anti-colonial and anti-oppression movements in many parts of the world, historically and today. We pledge to combat all forms of discrimination and racism at Wellesley and outside its walls, including anti-Palestinian racism, anti-Muslim racism, anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Blackness, white supremacy, and antisemitism. FSJP rejects the conflation of support for Palestinian liberation and antisemitism.
- We express our solidarity with students who are organizing for Palestinian liberation and self-determination, and who are facing threats and attacks for their advocacy. We support their right to not be subjected to harassment, intimidation, and racist hate speech, because of their advocacy for Palestinian rights. FSJP pledges to support and amplify the work of student and other campus groups fighting for Palestinian liberation at Wellesley. The most securely employed among us will protect more vulnerable members of the campus community in their right to free speech and activism.
- FSJP will participate in regional cross-campus coalitions with allies at other colleges and universities and as a branch of an emergent national and international network of solidarity.
- FSJP supports the call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions and for an end to Israel’s occupation and colonization of Palestine. We urge academic and cultural institutions to recognize the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people as enshrined in international law.
